Berghof Peace Support

Supporting Peaceful Change

Berghof Peace Support is the sister organisation of Berghof Conflict Research. Established in 2004, Berghof Peace Support aims to respond in effective and hands-on ways to the global challenges of violent political conflict.

Engaged in reflective practice, staff regularly review and evaluate their work, publishing papers and policy briefings on relevant issues. This distinctive approach to practice allows Berghof Peace Support to constantly adapt and develop its work for greater impact on the ground.

The mission of the organisation is three-fold:

  • Advocate and apply the Systemic Conflict Transformation approach to the prevention and transformation of violent political conflicts
  • Support peace processes by enhancing networks of internal and external organisation in both politics and civil society
  • Foster creative, effective and durable peace initiatives

Within this framework, there are four main programme areas: Peace Support Structures and Processes, including a project on the role of development cooperation work; Non-Official Peace Envoys, or interventions aimed at the Track 1.5 level; the Transformation of Non-State Armed Groups; and Reflective Practice, which focuses on Systemic Conflict Transformation and Organisational Learning.

Since its establishment only a short while ago, Berghof Peace Support has undertaken a busy schedule of activities in nearly 10 conflict and post-conflict contexts throughout the world, including: Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Nepal, Georgia/Abkhazia, Guatemala, Colombia, Bolivia, Aceh/Indonesia and Sudan.

Strategic Benefits

The Foundation maintains a permanent strategic relationship to Berghof Peace Support, providing minimal core funds and office space to the organisation, which it shares with our research center in Berlin, Germany. This readily facilitates an on-going exchange of expertise and permits close cooperation.

The complementary, but distinct nature of the work of these two organisations thus comes together to produce a dynamic synergy which enables novel possibilities for both better understanding and more effectively transforming violent political conflict in peaceful ways. Where Berghof Peace Support offers practical experience in the field, Berghof Conflict Research supports and develops this work from a research-oriented perspective.

This unique combination of research and practice under one roof is what most distinguishes the Berghof name.

Berghof Peace Support is an independent limited liability company registered in Germany. It is governed by an Advisory Board composed of high-profile practitioners and academics from around the globe.

The organisation actively raises funds from both public and private sources in order to sustain and expand its valuable work.
