Berghof Conflict Research

A Commitment to Quality

In 1993, we decided to establish Berghof Conflict Research (formerly the Berghof Research Center for Constructive Conflict Management) as a permanent project of the foundation. Our aim was to develop an on-going operational capacity to explore and develop constructive approaches for engaging in the peaceful transformation of violent political conflict.

As an independent think tank producing high quality, state-of-the-art research, Berghof Conflict Research remains a philanthropic milestone for the foundation.

Our research center seeks to occupy the middle-ground between theory and practice in the study of violent political conflict, while also emphasizing the value of providing relevant advice to policy makers. Staff members draw on practical experience and the lived realities of violent political conflict to create innovative research and conceptual approaches to this complex challenge. The primary objective of this undertaking is to generate new ideas, tools and resources for the practice of conflict transformation.

Berghof Conflict Research produces a steady stream of publications each year. This impressive output is widely disseminated to practitioners, academics and scholars, policy advisors, professional networks, among others. Research staff also publish their own books, articles and conference papers in a range of other venues, as well as collaborate on publications with other researchers. For a full list of publications and current projects, see their website.

The Foundation Board of Trustees, which is composed of a diverse range of academic expertise, serves as the primary governing body of the research center. This ensures the high quality and relevance of the center’s research and publications.

The Foundation provides the research center with core funding and office space in Berlin, Germany. The staff also actively seek project-related support from other funding bodies.

Berghof Handbook for Conflict Transformation

Among many other top-quality publications, our research center is perhaps best known for its Berghof Handbook on Conflict Transformation. The Handbook is a widely used and highly reputable online publication that is constantly evolving. As a comprehensive and cumulative website resource, it provides continually updated cutting-edge knowledge, experience and lessons learned.

Website content comes from two central resources:

1. Commissioned Articles by leading experts from current practice and scholarship

2. A Dialogue Series on key contemporary issues, where practitioners and scholars can critically engage with and debate one another in light of their varying experiences

Both the Dialogues and a 2004 edition of the Handbook are also distributed in print. To order, visit the Handbook website.

Select articles are translated into six different languages (Spanish, Turkish, French, Russian, Sinhala and Tamil). The 2004 hard copy edition is available in Russian, Sinhala and Tamil.
