Networking for Peace and Human Rights

The foundation joins Ariadne, the European Human Rights Funders Network, as its first German member. “We see this as another valuable step toward fulfilling our commitment to promote effective networks of support with partner organisations,” says Johannes Zundel, Berghof Foundation CEO. He goes on to remark, “With so much active support for human rights in Germany, we hope other funders here will follow our lead and become members, too.”

Established in 2009, Ariadne is a donor-driven network. Its primary aim is to facilitate greater cooperation and collaboration between European funders by linking donors who share aims, work in similar geographical areas or address the same issues. This way, human rights grant making in Europe can add up to more than the sum of its parts.

The network acts as an umbrella for human rights donors of all kinds, from professionally-staffed foundations to small private funds. Currently numbering around 110 members, this includes individual donors, philanthropy consultants, representatives from state-backed funding agencies and staff from 35 foundations spread across several European countries.

Ariadne takes a broad view of human rights issues, with members’ interests ranging from peace and conflict prevention work, women’s rights, children’s rights and disability rights to integration and migration issues and civil and political rights.

Funding for Ariadne is provided by Hivos, the Open Society Institute, the Oak Foundation, the Tinsley Foundation and Atlantic Philanthropies.

The Network is free to join.
