Announcing Georg Zundel Scholarship Awards

We are pleased to announce that the first Georg Zundel Scholarship has been awarded. Established in 2008 in memory of the Foundation’s founder, this two-year scholarship supports PhD students who demonstrate a capacity for excellence in the field of conflict transformation.

In all, 102 applications were received from more than 20 countries around the world. Two outstanding students were selected as the first recipients of the scholarship.

Javaid Hayat will focus his research on the conflict in Kashmir, with special attention to collaboration between state and non-state actors. Coming from Kashmir, Mr. Hayat brings hands-on insight and experience to his PhD work.

Markus Weissert, from Germany, will work on approaches to reconciliation and transitional justice in Guatemala and Peru, including comparative case studies with other post-conflict transition processes.

The Georg Zundel Scholarship inaugurates the new PhD programme set up by Berghof Conflict Research. Designed to enhance the research profile of the organisation, the centre’s Director, Professor Dr. Dr Hans J. Giessmann, is responsible for reviewing the scholarship applications and selecting suitable candidates. He will also supervise both students, who will join the team in Berlin this autumn.

The foundation congratulates both students on their success.
