Glossary— Value Added

A unique feature of our website is the Glossary. So often, key terms in the field of conflict studies are used in loose and contradictory ways. This reflects the reality that such concepts have not been clearly defined. It also indicates on-going disagreement among practitioners, funders and academics alike.

We decided to include a Glossary for three simple reasons.

First, it is an educational tool that introduces key terms and concepts to those who are unfamiliar with or new to the field of conflict studies. Importantly, it does not seek to be a comprehensive guide. And it is still a work in progress, with more terms yet to come.

Second, it defines popular and commonly used terms as these are understood and applied in the Berghof context. Transparency is crucial to our overall philanthropic ethos. Most of the definitions are borrowed from Berghof Conflict Research and Berghof Peace Support publications.

Third, we hope that the clarity and relevance of these definitions will help encourage more coherent and consistent use of key terms in a wider audience.

When one of the terms in the Glossary appears elsewhere in the website, its definition can be quickly and directly accessed by clicking on it.

This way, you know exactly what we’re talking about.
