How to Apply
General Guidelines
Potential candidates are requested to familiarise themselves with our Funding Policy and follow the steps outlined below.
Given the close working relationships between the Foundation and Berghof Conflict Research, along with its sister organisation, Berghof Peace Support, all applicants are strongly advised to visit their websites before submitting a funding request:
We accept grant requests in either German or English, without prejudice. However, applications in German must include a one-page Executive Summary in English.
TopRelevant Deadlines
Initial Application: last Friday in April
Full Application: last Friday in August (Eligible candidates only)
TopStep One: Initial Application
To submit an Initial Application, all applicants must complete the Foundation’s online Grant Application Form.
The Grant Application Form will require applicants to provide data about themselves and the project, including a brief project description of no more than 500 characters. Applicants will also be asked to upload two documents in PDF format: their Letter of Inquiry and the relevant CVs.
The Letter of Inquiry must be 2-3 pages long, typed in font no smaller than 12 point. It should include:
- Brief project description focused on central aims, practical outcomes and dissemination of results.
- Short methodological statement, with reference to the time scale of project.
- Total amount of grant request.
- Brief explanation of how the project corresponds to the Foundation’s philanthropic objectives and which of its three Thematic Interests it most closely relates to.

TopStep Two: Full Application
A Foundation representative will contact those who are eligible to submit a Full Application for a grant request no later than June 30th. Applications that have not been requested are discarded.
The Full Application must be a maximum of 10 pages long, typed in font no smaller than 12 point. It must elaborate the plans laid out in the Initial Letter of Inquiry and should include:
- Project summary and description focused on primary aims and objectives, with reference to practical contributions.
- Methodological overview indicating how the project will be conducted and a clear time scale.
- Statement on the importance and/or relevance of the project, with special emphasis on its potential novelty and innovation.
- Indication of the wider impact of the project, with attention to the dissemination of results and outcomes, especially in published form.
- Explanation of how the project relates to the Foundation’s philanthropic objectives; this is especially important for Solicited Grants Programme applicants.
- Total project costs, with a specific budget breakdown for the project’s entire duration (additional to the 10-page limit).
- Contact details of applicant: name, title, address, phone number and email.

Please note that an invitation to submit a Full Application is no guarantee of funding. Successful candidates will be notified after the annual Board of Trustees meeting and no later than November 30th.
