Insider Mediators

Situated within a conflict, these are trusted individuals (NGO leaders, traditional or religious authorities, former politicians, respected academics and social activists) who play the role of third parties. In particular, they serve as intermediaries, helping to exchange information and messages or testing the ground for (in)formal talks. Insider mediators are characterized by their in-depth knowledge of the conflict situation, cultural sensitivity and close relationships to the parties and, in some cases, their normative authority. Typically unofficial, the quality of their mediation is crucial: not only may it open doors for formal mediation, but it also can complement official negotiation processes.
